Is the process similar to microblading for eyebrows or is it a different method?
They are both treatments that are used to provide clients with lasting make-up that doesn’t wash off! Semi-permanent makeup requires the use of a machine to place a pigment into the dermis. Whereas, microblading uses a manual tool that is used to etch pigments into the epidermal layer of the skin, so slightly shallower than the dermis. It is the tools and technique that differentiate the two, however are both have professional and great looking outcomes!
Can you give us a quick step-by-step of an appointment?
A numbing cream will be applied to your lips prior to the treatment, while you discuss the outcome you are hoping to achieve in a through consultation, where we discuss the shape, pigments and the overall outcome. The pigments chosen will be dependent on your natural lip colour and will be tailored to the depth of colour you want from the treatment. Pigment can be applied all over your natural lips to give colour and definition, or overlined slightly to create the appearance of a fuller lip. The treatment can take 45 minutes to one hour.
How do you choose the colour of the lipstick tattoo?
Normally clients want a shade that is wearable during the day and at night. Subtle colours can always be gradually enhanced and the most requested shades are the more natural. Lots of clients bring in their favourite lipstick into the clinic, as this is often their preferred shade.
How long does the tattooing take?
The tattooing itself can take 45 minutes to one-and-a-half hours.
How long does lip tattooing last? Do you need touch-ups?
Colour can last up to a year; however, the pigment will fade naturally and lighten over this time. A colour boost procedure should be carried out every 6-12 months.
Does lip tattooing hurt?
A highly skilled, practitioner in semi-permanent makeup will take every precaution to reduce discomfort. Before the application, we numb the area and do not proceed until you feel comfortable.
Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime required for this procedure. The colour is extremely rich for two days before the lips start to shed the excess dead skin. Afterwards, the colour beneath becomes about 50 per cent less intense.
What’s the aftercare process?
We provide you with a healing balm on the day of our treatment which should be applied regularly to help your lips heal. You are advised to avoid getting your lips wet and not to eat any salty or spicy food. The healing process can take up to 10 days with lips.
Aftercare
- The healing balm should be applied 2-3 times a day for the first 7-10 days or until the area has completely healed.
- Avoid spicy, salty and citric food/drinks for the first 4 Days.
- Drink through a straw for the first 4 days.
- No kissing for the first 7 Days.Use a lip care product (lip balm, chapstick) that is SPF 20 or more in warmer climates.
- No swimming, sauna/jacuzzi, sun beds or exercise for the first 7-10 days.
- If you are planning on undergoing any lip augmentation treatments eg: lip fillers you must wait until 1 month after your make up treatment before doing so.
- If you suffer from cold sores/herpes simplex, please use Zovirax for 7 days prior and the 7 days after treatment. Do not use the healing balm during this time.
Maintenance
- It is advisable to use a high SPF to protect your enhancement and keep the colour vibrant.
- Avoid exfoliation on the treatment area.
- Strong sun, skin peels, exfoliation, AHA, retin-A creams will all contribute to the colour fading quickly.
- An annual colour refresh treatment will be needed to ensure the stunning results remain fresh and long lasting.
